Should a student religious group at a public university be allowed to bar a certain group of students from membership — gay students, to be precise — without losing its official student-group status, and the funding and other benefits that go with it? Today, the answer to that constitutionally loaded question depends on which federal appellate court you ask.

Two Planes Collide Over Florida, Three Killed

Last Updated on Saturday, 20 March 2010 07:00 Written by Daisy Harley Saturday, 20 March 2010 07:00

WILLISTON, Fla. — A single-engine plane and a kit-built aircraft collided in clear, sunny skies Saturday over central Florida, killing three people, authorities said.

A Williston woman who thought she heard a gunshot discovered the kit-built plane upside down in a field near her house and called authorities, Levy Sheriff’s Office Capt. Evan Sullivan. When emergency responders arrived, they found a second plane engulfed in flames in a dense wooded area several hundred yards away.

“The fire was extremely intense and at the area of the Piper 32 crash an oak tree caught on fire some 40 feet above ground,” Sullivan said.

Debris from the planes was spread about a half-mile long and a quarter-mile wide, Sullivan said. Two bodies were found in the Piper in the wooded area and a 73-year-old man was discovered in the other plane.

Sullivan wouldn’t release the victims’ names, saying next of kin had to be notified.

The kit-built aircraft, also known as an experimental plane, left from Ocala, about 25 miles southeast of Williston, but Sullivan didn’t know where it was headed. The Piper took off from the Williston Municipal Airport and it was not clear where it was going.

“There are a lot of unknowns right now,” he said.

Joel Schwartzberg: When Rock Bands and Kid Shows Collide

Last Updated on Sunday, 14 March 2010 01:15 Written by Daisy Harley Sunday, 14 March 2010 01:15

Are your kids ready for KISS? No matter, because Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and company are ready for your kids. Word is out that the timeless rock band is developing a half-hour comedy for kids. This isn’t KISS’ first foray into kids TV; self-promotional genius Simmons has already appeared in a number of childrens shows and specials.

Also getting into the act is the band Devo, which whipped up a performance of “Watch Us Work It” on Yo Gabba Gabba last week. Try to detect it. It’s not too late. And of course, Sesame Street has hosted many grown-up bands in its history, including REM, *NSYNC, Destiny’s Child, En Vogue, Goo Goo Dolls, Spin Doctors, and Black Sabbath. Wait — one of those might be a mistake.

With all of this rock-to-tot crossover going on, I’m wondering what other well-known musical acts might see the kids space as a way to expand their fan base. A few suggestions:

Graduation Day! with Kanye West
Kanye West surprises high school graduation ceremonies across America by running onstage during the valedictory speech to show love for the salutatorian.

Goin’ Gaga
Lady Gaga performs fashion makeovers for kids using only school supplies and adhesive material found in their lockers.

Adams’ Family
Pooling their talents, Adam Ant and Adam Lambert visit unsuspecting families in the bible belt to teach makeup tricks to their sons and daughters. (Well, sons mostly.)

Puff, Daddy
In this touching documentary series, Puff Daddy talks to young rappers with bronchially-challenged fathers.
